Alfred Joseph Wingert

March 13, 1941 — October 3, 2021

Alfred Joseph Wingert, son of Alfred C. and Antilia C. (Blum) Wingert was born at home near Earling, IA on March 13, 1941. He was baptized and received his sacraments at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Panama, IA. He attended St. Mary’s School in Panama and graduated with the class of 1959. Following high school, he worked for Otto Klein, Clem Arkfeld, and Bob Bowles Feed and Grain. He married his high school sweetheart, Katherine (Karen) M. Kohles, on September 8, 1962. They were lifelong members of St. Mary’s Parish in Panama, and together raised six children. Alfred began farming in 1964 and continued to farm two family-owned century farms with his son, Glenn, well into his retirement. Early in his farming career, he milked cows, then switched to farrow-to-finish hogs, and stock cows. He received the Farmer of the Year award from the Panama Community Club in 1979. He also received the Shelby County Pork Producer of the Year award in 1987. In addition to farming, Alfred worked at the Harlan Pork Plant, at Farmland in the 1980s, and later worked as a custodian at the Harlan Community High School, and New Park Elementary School, officially retiring in 2006. Alfred was a standout basketball player in high school and continued playing Town Team basketball after high school. He also enjoyed playing baseball and slow-pitch softball, where he was known to be a wall at first base, able to scoop balls in the dirt with ease. Alfred was a member of the Panama Community Chorus and acted in many productions, along with his wife and children. Alfred loved fishing any chance he got, playing cards, eating popcorn and watching sports on TV, and watching his children and grandchildren participate in their sports and other activities.

Alfred died peacefully in his home on Sunday, October 3, 2021 surrounded by his wife, Karen, and all his loving family at the age of 80 years, six months and 20 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Donald and Richard. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Karen; his children Michele (Craig) Weis, LuAnn (John) Schwery, Glenn (Mariann) Wingert, Dan (Laura) Wingert, Janet (Jeff) Kummerfeldt, and Cindy (Mitch) Boysen; his siblings Ken (Mary) Wingert, Mark (Maria) Wingert, and Joan Wingert (Jill Zasadny); sisters-in-law Angie Wingert and Barb Wingert; 21 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
