Betty Jean Caughey

Betty J. Caughey, age 92, passed away at her home on March 9, 2020.

She was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa on October 14, 1927 to the late Thorvald and Carrie (Nelsen) Hansen.Betty attended Abraham Lincoln High School. She worked in their family owned bakery, Hansen’s Pastry Shop on 100 block in Council Bluffs, IA. She married Dale Caughey on June 13, 1950. Dale was an accountant while Betty took on responsibility of a homemaker while raising their 4 children. The home soon became a gathering place for all the neighborhood children as they enjoyed Betty’s homemade cookies. As the children grew older, Betty cheerfully returned to the bakery as a cake decorator for Hy-Vee in 1978. Even though her cakes were in high demand, she retired from the bakery upon the birth of her first grandchild in order to become a stay at home grandma and babysit. Dale and Betty’s house quickly filled up once again with the addition of 7 more grandchildren to babysit. They enjoyed making memories with all of them and wouldn’t have it any other way. Betty soon became a caregiver to Dale after he started showing signs of Alzheimers. Dale passed away July 3, 2013. The house was always filled with kids and pets. She loved animals and could never say no if someone brought home a stray.
Betty was blessed with 4 great grandchildren that she adored in her final days.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dale F. Caughey; brother, Gerald Hansen.

Betty is survived by her children, Bob Caughey (Tami), Jill Hermsen (Scott), Janet Hunt, Kelly Stuckey (Mark); brother, Ron Hansen (Marlene); 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Memorial service is 1:00 p.m. on Friday March 13, 2020 at the Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home Visitation will be held an hour prior to the service, also at the funeral home. Inurnment is in the Ridgewood Cemetery. The family will direct memorials.
