Carl A. Smith

Carl A. Smith, age 83, of Council Bluffs passed away April 26, 2015. He was born in Newell, South Dakota on April 10, 1932 to the late Clarence and Halya (Ekstrom) Smith. After high school he attended college and then served his country in the United States Army. When he returned from service, he finished college and for a couple years was a math teacher. He retired from Griffin Pipe after 32 years. He was a member of Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Chester and Stanley Smith; sisters, Fern Berglund-Ryther and Elsie Oedekoven. Carl is survived by his wife of 56 years, Norma Jean Smith; son and daughter-in-law, Lindon and Lonni Smith; daughters, Cynthia Burkitt and her husband Michael, Valerie Hoffman and her husband Ross, LuEllyn Smith, Roxanne Guinan and her husband Michael; sisters, Carolyn Oedekoven and Shirley Aronson and her husband, Andrew; grandchildren, Naomi Smith, Gabriel Smith and his wife Laurel Burk, Luke Hoffman, Emily Hoffman, Nathan Hoffman and Ben Hoffman; a host of other family and friends. Visitation is Wednesday 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home. Funeral service is Thursday 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment is in the Ridgewood Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church.
