Catherine June (King) Scott

May 26, 1922 — February 16, 2016

Catherine June (King) Scott, age 93, was reunited in Heaven with her beloved husband of over 70 years, Irwin Scott, on February 16, 2016. She passed away peacefully at Hansen House with her children at her bedside after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was born in rural Red Oak, Iowa, on May 26, 1922 to the late Stanley and Mabel (Clay) King. She graduated from Red Oak High School with the class of 1940 and continued her education at Parsons College where she received her teaching degree. Her teaching career began in a one room school house teaching grades 1st through 8th. As the only adult, she was also charged with all maintenance and janitorial duties, such as keeping a fire lit in the pot-bellied stove. Next, she joined the Underwood School Faculty and taught 3rd and 4th grades for 3 years. Shortly after moving into Mrs. Allie Aney's boarding house, Mrs. Aney called her great nephew, Irwin, and told him she'd found him the perfect wife, and the rest is history. Catherine and Irwin celebrated 70 years of LOVE and MARRIAGE on October 7, 2014. Seven months later, Irwin passed away and Catherine's Alzheimer's worsened exponentially. In addition to Irwin and her parents, Catherine was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Marlin Perdue of Griswold, IA, and brother-in-law, Philip Mellott of Red Oak, IA. Catherine is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Jane Scott of Underwood, IA; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Mark Schaefer of Minnetonka, MN; 4 grandchildren, Kyle and wife Linda Scott, Kevin, Ryan and Allison Schaefer; 1 great grandchild, Blake Scott; and sister, Elsie Mellott of Omaha, NE. Her family would sincerely like to thank the loving staff at Hansen House. Visitation is Friday 6-8 p.m. at the Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home. Funeral service is Saturday 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment is in the Fisher Cemetery in Underwood. Memorials are suggested to the Underwood Community of Christ Church, PO Box 34, Underwood, IA 51576 or the Alzheimer's Association.
