David J. Fuss

David J. Fuss, age 93, of Council Bluffs died November 28, 2017. He was born July 2, 1924 to David and Katherine Bernhardt Fuss. The family moved to Council Bluffs on May 1, 1934. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High school in 1942 and joined the United States Navy in March of 1943.

David was first sent to Farragut, Idaho Naval Training Station and was placed in O.G.U. after graduation. O.G.U. stands for Out Going Unit. He was assigned to the USS McCord DD534 Flagship of Destroyer Squadron #47 US Navy #7th Pacific Fleet. During a surface battle of Leyte Gulf, they engaged the largest battleship in the world, the Japanese, Yamatoe with 18” long range canon, main battery. He was discharged January 25, 1946 at Lambert Field in St. Louis, Missouri. The Union Pacific Railroad as a car foreman occupied his next forty years and he retired in 1983 as a car foreman and Relief general car foreman. He was a member of the UP Old Timers, No. 3, past president of Kenneth Lodge No. 577, Brotherhood Railway Carmen of America and past president of American Railway Supervisors Association #141.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, William and Fred Fuss; sisters, Alma Drake and Irene Mills; infant siblings, Leo and Eldean; son-in-law, Dr. Dan Connor.

He and his wife, Maren have been married 66 years. He is also survived by his sister, Donna Fuss of Council Bluffs; his daughters, Kathleen D. Oder (Micheal) of Council Bluffs, Mary P. Connor of Edgewood, Kentucky, Leslie D. Richardson (Randall) of Council Bluffs and Donna J. Kauffman also of Council Bluffs; four grandchildren, Jordan Turner (Steve), Dana Ratcliff (Scott) and Jacob Richardson all of Council Bluffs and Alex Connor of Edgewood, Kentucky; five great grandchildren, Hank, Mac, Clayton, Will and Emily all of Council Bluffs.
