Dorsey Dean Pope

Dorsey Pope, age 94, passed away May 28, 2022. He was born April 12, 1928, to Dorsey and Katherine (Fish) Pope in Avoca, IA. As a teenager Dean held jobs in Avoca at the creamery and mill, and at age 16 was hired during the summer to lay rail from Underwood to Avoca. He graduated from Avoca HS in 1945 at age 17 and enlisted in the Navy where he served two tours as an electricians mate in the Pacific and the Mediterranean, completing two world cruises. After his enlistments, Dean returned to Council Bluffs and worked at Union Pacific in both union and management capacities until his retirement in 1986.
In 1955 Dean met and married the love of his life, Patty Lou (Mark), and they had, as he would say, the best 61 years of his life. He raised three wonderful children and supported his grandchildren and great grandchildren in all their activities. Some of the things Dean and Pat also loved doing over the years included dancing with their dance club, serving Meals on Wheels for 22 years, attending Navy ship reunions across the country; and making special memories with family at their lake cabin in South Dakota.

Dean was dedicated to his family, his community, and his neighborhood. His "house on the hill" always felt like home to any visitor who stopped by. Dean's life was a life well-lived and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patty Pope; son, Mark Pope; sister, Darlene Jordan; great granddaughter,Elli Reed.

Dorsey is survived by his daughter, Teri (Aaron) Vorthmann; son, Timothy (Tracy) Pope; daughter-in-law, Pamela Pope; siblings, Jack (Norma) Pope, Mike Pope, and Donna Kelley; 8 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; a host of other family and friends.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 01, 2022.

Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 AM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Thursday, June 2, 2022. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Crescent, IA Fire Department.
