Robert D Thompson

June 2, 1943 — September 7, 2021

Robert Duane Thompson, of Missouri Valley, Iowa passed away at CHI Immanuel Hospital after a short intense battle with Interstitial Lung Disease. He battled with courage, kindness and grace and died surrounded by family on September 7, 2021. Bob was a much loved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.

The third child of Ralph and Fern Thompson, Bob was born June 2, 1943 in Omaha, Nebraska. The son of a pastor, Bob grew up in several places: Omaha, Nebraska: Oelwein, Webster City, and Council Bluffs Iowa. Bob attended schools in Webster City and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Bob married Cynthia Pringle in September 1963. Their marriage was blessed with three children, nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. For many years Bob was on staff at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa before retiring in 1997. Bob enjoyed meeting people and for many years continued to work part-time in retail.

When it came to Bob’s crew, he cast a wide net which encompassed family and friends alike. He delighted in people and never knew a stranger. Bob’s eyes would light up and his smile would leave no doubt that he delighted in his loved ones. Bob loved story-telling and laughing around kitchen tables and campfires…..or about any location where people might gather. Every year the Thompson party-of-five vacationed whether the family car cooperated or not. Bob enjoyed hiking, camping and exploring with his children, grandchildren and family friends. Bob was an avid sports fan, but enjoyed any activity involving the grandchildren whom he adored. Bob had a heart for people and often extended a willing ear or a helping hand; he was an advocate for his people.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Fern Thompson.

He is survived by his companion Nancy Runge of Missouri Valley, IA and his three children, Laura (Scott) Crowell, of Lynd, MN, Robert (Val) Thompson of Johnston, IA, Julie Thompson of Columbia, MO; siblings Sharon Porter of Oklahoma, Ralph “Tom” (Carol) Thompson of Brighton, Colorado, Jeannette Speck of Omaha, Connie (Rick) Behrens of Omaha, Debbie Thompson of Council Bluffs, Colette Holcombe of Belen, NM, one aunt, two uncles, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
