Wayne Joseph Giese

August 15, 1945 — May 5, 2020

Wayne Joseph “Joe” Giese, 74 years, of Omaha, NE, passed on May 5th, 2020 at Bergan Mercy Hospital due to complications from heart disease.

Wayne was born on August 15th, 1945 in Sioux City, IA. He grew up in Laurel, NE under the loving care of Bill and Clara Betters. In high school he played trumpet in the band and enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling. Wayne was an incredible model car and plane builder. His room had many examples of his fine craftsmanship, he paid impeccable attention to the smallest details. He continued this hobby into adulthood and taught it to his sons. He served in the United States Navy for 23 years before retiring in Bellevue, NE with his wife Debbie.
In high school, Wayne worked at Harper’s grocery store where he built his foundation in the grocery business. After graduation, Wayne enlisted in the United States Navy where he served as a disbursing clerk. One of his assignments was working for the base exchange in Adak, Alaska where he was able to use his grocery expertise gained as a youth. Upon retirement from the Navy in 1986, Wayne returned to his roots and went to work for No Frills Grocery as an accounting clerk. Wayne retired from No Frills in 2006.
While in the Navy he was assigned to a variety of ships to include the USS Belknap, the USS Eugene A. Green, the USS Stribling, the USS Peoria and the USS John F. Kennedy. His service took him all over the world. His eyes would glaze over as he told stories of his travels and the things he had seen. He often reminisced about sitting on the fantail of the ship while at sea. He would sit and enjoy a cup of coffee and a cigarette while a blanket of stars illuminated the night sky to end his day.
Although Wayne enjoyed his time on the ship, he often expressed sorrow for having to leave his family behind when sea duty called. When possible, Wayne shared his adventures with his family. He took them with him as he was stationed in Norfolk, VA, Pensacola, FL, New Orleans, LA, San Diego, CA, Bellevue, NE, and Kenitra, Morocco in Africa. The rich cultural experiences were unforgettable and developed a thirst for adventure in his sons.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Debbie (Hubler) Giese.
He is survived by his sons, Dean (Pam) Giese of Macedonia, IA, Darin Giese of Boise, ID, and Jody Giese of Nebraska City, NE; their mother, Sharon Bartz of Omaha, NE; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and host of other family and friends.

At his request, no chapel services or visitation will be held. Military honors will be presented at a brief graveside service at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 9th, 2020 at the Bohemian Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska.

Should friends desire, contributions may be sent to VetHelp1 10043 R Street, Omaha, NE 68127.
