Bert F. Rutledge, age 71, retired captain of the Council Bluffs Fire Department, passed away unexpectedly on October 25, 2015. He was born in Red Oak, Iowa on October 4, 1944 to the late Ora and Nellie (Summers) Rutledge. Bert graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School with the class of 1962. His career was with the Council Bluffs Fire Department and he retired in 2000 after 31 years. He also owned and operated Berts Appliance Service and Rutledge Rentals. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Ernest, Ralph, Mervin and Merle Rutledge; sisters, Phyllis Rutledge, Joyce Harlan, June Jennings and Margie Batten. Bert is survived by his wife of 52 years, Donna Rutledge; children, Myles Rutledge (Jean) and Lynette Lynch (Jeff Peck); sister, Velma Spurling; 11 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; fellow current and retired firefighters; a host of other family and friends. Visitation is 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home. Funeral service is 2:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Interment is in the Cedar Lawn Cemetery. The family will direct memorials.
