Doris Jean Heineman

Doris Jean Heineman, 80, of Council Bluffs died November 13 after a prolonged illness. A celebration of her life will be on Saturday 11AM at Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Keokuk National Cemetery. Doris was born at home in Kahoka, MO on November 25, 1931, the third daughter to Alfred Arthur Crum and Gladys Mae Linder. She attended a one-room schoolhouse that was several miles from their farm. At age 10, the family moved to a dairy farm a few miles from Keokuk, IA where she attended both Junior and Senior High School. While attending Senior High, she worked at Graham Hospital along with her Mother who was a Practical Nurse. Doris married Peter E. Heineman, September 11, 1949 in Keokuk, IA. They lived in Canton Missouri while her husband attended Culver Stockton College and later moved to Council Bluffs where she has resided ever since. She stayed at home to raise their three children; Sharen Lee, Bim August, and Peter Lea until they were old enough to be in school. When her husband became Program Director for the YMCA, she formed the first ever handicapped swim program for Polio victims. An active member of the Epworth United Methodist Church, she was a Parish Visitor for 12 years. Later, she went to work at the Immanuel Lutheran Medical Center in Omaha Nebraska becoming the office manager for the psychiatric center at the hospital. When one of the doctors left to start his own practice, she went with him to manage the office; a position she held for 18 years. Doris and a friend started Finishing Touches, Inc. that they ran together for 3 years. Doris bought out the friend's interest in the company and purchased Betty's Flowers, merging the two businesses which she and her husband ran for 12 years. Doris was an avid Rotarian having served as Club President, Assistant District Governor, District Governor, District and Zone Foundation Chair, Polio Plus Chair, and PETS trainer. She has been a member of the Council Bluffs Chamber of Commerce, past president Chamber Small Business Association, past president Chamber Networking Breakfast, past president Council Bluffs Altrusa Club, past secretary Omaha River City Regents, member Council Bluffs American Business Women Association, board member Pottawattamie County Visiting Nurses Association, member of the Iowa Western Community College Advisory Board, Alegent Health Mercy Hospital Guild President, and board member Bluffs Arts Council among others. She is survived by her husband, three children, and two Grandchildren, sister Marjorie, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents and sister Irene. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Children?s Square. The family wishes to thank the physicians, nurses and staff of Alegent Health for their remarkable care and to all her friends for their thoughts and prayers.
