Leland N. Thoren

Leland Norman Thoren, 86, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, joined our loving Creator at 12:31 am, Monday, September 6, 2021, at his home surrounded by his immediate family.

Leland was born on June 18, 1935, in Stanton, Iowa, to Henry and Ruby (Olson) Thoren. Leland was the fourth of four sons of Henry and Ruby and was very proud of his Swedish heritage. Leland married Jeannie Marie Clark on February 5, 1966, and they enjoyed a family-centered and loving marriage that lasted 55 years until his passing.

Leland is survived by his wife and their three daughters: Heidi (William) Carpenter of Omaha, NE; Jenny (Mike) Slagle of Raymore, MO; and Tammy (Ryan) Schnackenberg of Council Bluffs, IA. Also surviving are nine grandchildren: Hannah, Noah, Luke, Micah, Abby, Levi, Grace, Jordan and Zoey; great grandchild Rilynn; and a special little Papillon, Winnie Pooh.

Leland's mother, father, brothers: Delaine, Donovan, and Lavon and nephew Rick Thoren preceded him in death.

Leland attended a one-room schoolhouse until the age of 10 when the family farm was sold and the family moved to Red Oak, Iowa. He graduated from high school in Red Oak and then furthered his education at Omaha University in Nebraska. He started working for Prucka Truck Line before he was drafted into the United States Army. Leland proudly served his country for his two-year enlistment and was stationed in Munich, Germany. While in the US Army, Leland was a Military Police officer and assisted with clerical duties.

After serving in the US Army, he returned to Omaha, working for Prucka and later for Interstate Motor Freight. Leland was especially adept at numbers and accounting, and held financial accounting roles at Yellow Freight, Brown Transfer, FP Corporation and other companies before his retirement. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 554 throughout his working career.

Leland loved spending time with his family and celebrating special life events and accomplishments. He enjoyed woodworking, building and refinishing furniture, mowing his lawn, and watching sports.

Everyone who knew Leland knew him as a hardworking, kind, loving, and gentle soul. In a world where such qualities are becoming increasingly rare, Leland was a one-of-a-kind person and will be missed by all who knew him and loved him. The world has indeed lost a beautiful person.

Leland will be buried at the Omaha National Cemetary with full military honors on October 15, 2021. Omaha National Cemetary is located at 14250 Schram Road in Omaha. A brief outdoor memorial service will precede the burial at 11am. All are welcome to attend. Please line up in your vehicle in Cortege Lane #1 by 10:45am to join the procession to the Committal Shelter.

The family will direct all memorial gifts and flowers.
