Alice Delia Smith

Jan 13, 1930 — Oct 9, 2026

Alice Smith found peace with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in heaven October 9, 2026 at Amelia Senior Living in Council Bluffs. She joins her husband of 75 years Ronald, who passed away April 8, 2025.

She was born Alice Delia Anderson on January 13, 1930 alongside her identical twin sister Anna, known as Anne, near Red Oak, Iowa. Alice was born to Curt and Frances (Waldron) Anderson. She grew up around sports from a young age, with her father Curt having a great fondness for baseball. Her and her sister played 6-on-6 basketball in Iowa for Stennett High School, where Alice played on the defensive end of the floor.

Alice met the love of her life, Ronald, on a baseball field in Red Oak, where she was introduced by her father who had gotten to know Ron, the new pitcher on the town ball club. They were married January 22, 1950 in Red Oak. She followed Ron to California when he was drafted into the US Marine Corps prior to the Korean War, where she worked at Camp Pendleton.

Alice gave birth to a son Douglas in 1953, while Ron was in Korea, and a second son Steven in 1958. They lived in Red Oak early in their relationship before settling in Council Bluffs. Alice had a variety of jobs including many years working for the Iowa State University extension office. It was through her work at Iowa State that the family first became Iowa State fans, leading to trips to bowl games, season football tickets, and a lot of fun times at Cyclone games. She also helped out at the shop of Smith Floor Covering, the family business.

Alice enjoyed watching her sons and grandchildren participate in sports and other activities. She was known fondly for her sense of humor, her infectious smile, her ham loaves, "Grandma sandwiches" and the most delicious Christmas sugar cookies you have ever had. She could often be found watching any baseball game or other sporting event on the TV. She also had a love of shopping, was a very good golfer, and enjoyed traveling the country with friends.

Alice is survived by her sons Doug (Cindy) Smith of Hiawatha, and Steve (Carrie) Smith of Council Bluffs. She had six grandchildren, Mindy (Eric) Johnson of Lincoln, Neb., Nathan Smith of Council Bluffs, Jesse (Ashley) Smith of Council Bluffs, Stacia (Brady) Petersen of Bristol, Conn., Shawn (Kayla) Smith of Crookston, Minn., and Katie (Brad) Forney of Cottage Grove, Minn., and great grandchildren Camryn and Gavin Johnson, Josie and Evie Smith, Nicole and Lucas Smith, Jensen and Curt Petersen, Noelle Smith, and Hazel and Theodore Forney. She is preceded in death by her husband Ronald, her twin sister Anne (Merald) Hein, her parents Curt and Frances Anderson and parents-in-law James and Cora Smith and several nieces and nephews.
