Arthur Nelson Garges, age 96, was born on March 15, 1929, in Mills County, Iowa, and passed away peacefully on February 22, 2026.
Arthur is survived by his sister, Evelyn Hedrick, and his beloved cat, "Lucky." He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who cherished him deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Margaret Garges; his brothers, Fay-Gerald and Jerald; his sister, Clara Mae Doan; and his longtime companion, Shirley Turner.
Arthur, affectionately known as "Art," resided at Primrose Retirement Community, where he continued to be known for his independence and steady spirit. He proudly served his country as a United States Navy veteran, serving aboard the USS Collett (DD-730) from 1946 to 1950. His military service was a great source of pride to him and to all who knew him.
Following his service, Art spent many years working as a truck driver for A1 Root and later in custodial services at Horseshoe Casino, where he worked until the remarkable age of 92. His strong work ethic and reliability were hallmarks of his life.
Throughout his years, Arthur was known for his quiet strength, resilience, and unwavering values of honesty, loyalty, and perseverance. He will be remembered for his wisdom, independence, and distinctive style, never leaving home without his cowboy boots and hat. Art had a deep love for animals, especially his cat Lucky, and enjoyed yard work, reading western books, visiting thrift stores and casinos, and spending time with Shirley. He continued driving until just six months ago, a testament to his independent nature.
Arthur is remembered with love and gratitude by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of service, dedication, and steadfast character will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
Per Arthur's request, no services will be held. His remains will be laid to rest at Glenwood Cemetery, near his parents.
Art and his family extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Primrose Retirement Communityand Hillcrest Hospice for the compassionate care and kindness shown to him.
