Brett Alan Turpen

Brett Alan Turpen, age 58, passed away Thursday April 6, 2023 in Hill City, Minnesota.


He was born August 26, 1964 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Larry and Roberta (Bobbie) Turpen. Brett was a 1982 graduate of Lewis Central High School. After graduation, Brett worked at Sutherland Lumber Company, and then moved on to Iowa Beef Packers (IBP) in Council Bluffs, Iowa. It was at IBP when he became interested in becoming a federal meat inspector with the USDA. After applying for the new position and passing the exam with flying colors, his first assignment with the USDA took him to Liberal, Kansas. During his assignment in Liberal, he started taking classes in Microbiology at Texas A&M to help further his career. After Liberal, Kansas Brett's next assignment took him to the Hormel plant in Fremont, Nebraska where he worked for several years.


Brett's next opportunity took him to Ft. Morgan, Colorado working at the Cargill Meat Packing Plant. He was then transferred to Northern Minnesota where he traveled to small towns to inspect locally owned businesses. While Living in Colorado and Minnesota Brett enjoyed the great outdoors. He loved the beauty of Minnesota in the fall. He would spend time visiting state parks, waterfalls and hiking trails. He especially enjoyed the time he was able to spend with his Uncle Todd and family while living in Minnesota.


Brett also loved spending time with his dog Alma, she was his best friend and companion. They enjoyed driving around looking at the horses and deer.


Some of Brett's hobbies included bow hunting, turkey hunting, fishing, morel mushroom hunting, riding his bicycle, Kayaking and cooking on his smoker. Brett was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and wore his black and gold with pride. He was always looking to share these passions with the ones he loved.


Brett is preceded in death by his grandparents, Pauline White, Darrell Turpen, Robert Trainer, Doris Trainer and his sister, Lisa (Turpen) Mott.


Brett is survived by his parents, Larry and Roberta (Bobbie) Turpen; brother, Matthew Turpen (Mary Jo); sister, Ruthann Downey (Michael); 8 nieces and nephews, Josh, Melissa, Jacob, and Trent Mott, Allie (Turpen) Hoke, and Maddie Turpen, Katie Downey, Brandon Downey; aunts; uncles; many cousins and friends.


Memorial Service will be held on Saturday April 29, 2023, at 3:00 PM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home. Visitation will be during the hour prior to the service.
