John William Redick, age 51, passed away June 27, 2023 in Conroe TX.
He was born November 3rd, 1971 in Council Bluffs, IA, the descendent of the Hon. John Irwin Redick (1828-1906) who was a founding father of the City of Omaha. He moved to Texas in 1988 from Omaha, NE where he was a student at Creighton Prep. He was a 1990 alumnus of Montgomery High School in Montgomery, TX. He attended DeVry University in Irving TX and Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX. Cause of death was cardiac complications from congenital heart disease.
John's love of the out of doors took him in many directions - Backpacking with Boy Scout Troop 23 (where he attained rank of Eagle Scout), water skiing, SCUBA diving, motocross and street bike racing. He was also an expert snow skier and was employed at one point as an instructor at Mt. Crescent in IA and in Jackson Hole, WY.
John was the owner of Big Boys Toys where he sold and serviced motorcycles, ATVs and utility vehicles. When he wasn't working on motors, he traveled the gulf coast states, hot shot trucking to oil field businesses. He was also a licensed bartender in Texas and managed several establishments in the Houston area.
He is survived by his son, Alex Grady in Colorado; parents, William and Janice (Duchman) Redick in Missouri; sister, Dr. Melinda (Lance) Harris in Oklahoma; nieces and nephews, Abigail Harris in Washington DC, Summer Harris, William Harris and James Harris in Oklahoma.
John is preceded in death by grandparents, John "Jack" Wood Redick, Jr, and Rosemary Homann Freymann of Omaha and Zella and Glen Duchman of Council Bluffs.
The family is forever grateful to the Methodist Hospital physicians at the Houston Medical Center Hospital Gerald Lowrie, MD, Scott Scheinen, MD, and Stan Duchman, MD for extending John's life far beyond expectations.
In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in support of Adult Congenital Heart Disease at Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center. Checks can be mailed c/o Houston Methodist Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 4384, Houston, TX 77210-4384. Donations can also be made online.
Cortege will leave Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home at 1:30pm for a graveside service in Forest Lawn Cemetery on Friday, November 3, 2023. Visitation will follow the graveside service at The Hoy Reception Center (1414 W. Broadway, Council Bluffs, IA) until 6:00p.m.
