Joy Ilene McDivitt Shannon, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2026.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Sylvia McDivitt Lehner; sister, Ida "Mickey" Henry; and husband, Lloyd Shannon.
She is survived by her children, Paula (Jim) Nock, Cheryl (Steve) Crandell, Denise Hoag, Christine (Jim) Bever; stepdaughter, Colleen (Gary) Barker; son-in-law, Jim Hoag; 8 grandchildren: Jami Pierce, Courtney (Ben) Percival, Tyler Crandell (Ariel), James Hoag, Liam Corcoran (Emilee), Taylor (Nathan) Vorce, Adin Bever (Cassidy), Aiden Corcoran, and 6 great-grandchildren.
Joy grew up in Urbandale, Iowa, and graduated from Urbandale High School in 1954, then completed one year of secretarial school. She married her first husband, after which they raised their four daughters in Council Bluffs.
Joy worked during a time when most mothers did not have full-time jobs, but always made sure she was available to take her daughters to their dance lessons, sporting games, music concerts, and many other school events. Joy was involved in many hobbies during her life, immersed in reading, jewelry making, tri-chem, tole painting, counter cross-stitch, and various sewing projects.
Joy worked for over 40 years as a social worker, including at the Iowa Department of Social Services and in the states of Nebraska and Arkansas. Joy and her husband, Lloyd, enjoyed their retirement years in Bella Vista, Arkansas. Shortly before his death, Lloyd and Joy moved back to Council Bluffs to be near family.
Your daughters thank you for all you have done during our lives.
God Bless
