It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our son, Lucas Michael Spanjer, 23 years old, who left us on Tuesday, July 7th, 2026 at his home. Lucas was a kind, compassionate, and dedicated young man who will be forever remembered for his hard-working, fun-loving personality.
Lucas was born to Brian and Cheri (Swearingen) Spanjer on March 10th, 2003, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. Lucas attended Hoover Elementary School, where he developed a liking for soccer, basketball, and flag football.
When Luke moved on to Kirn Middle School, he continued playing soccer and was on the 7th and 8th grade basketball, football, and track teams. He was an encouraging teammate and made many lifelong friends. Lucas played on several traveling basketball teams with some of his best friends through elementary and middle school. Many memories were made throughout those tournament traveling days. In high school at Abraham Lincoln, he decided to play football and run track. His favorite football memory was winning the annual AL-TJ rivalry game.
Luke benefited from the Trade Works program that he was enrolled in beginning in the fall of 2019 and graduated from AL in 2021. Lucas went on to join the I.U.O.E. Local 571, where he worked as an operator until this spring, when Lucas decided to withdraw from I.U.O.E. Local 571 and pursue an opportunity to join the Pipefitters Union Local 464.
Lucas enjoyed helping his dad and Uncle Mark work in the shop. He was often telling his dad to get out of the way and let him take over.
He enjoyed a few years of motocross racing at the local Westfair MX track, where he made many friends and had a lot of fun. Luke also loved to hunt pheasants with his friends and spent as much time as he could with his cousins. Lucas' loyalty to those he loved and his laid-back personality will be profoundly missed.
Lucas was preceded in death by his grandmother, Cheryl Swearingen.
Lucas is survived by his parents, Brian and Cheri Spanjer; sister, McKenzie Spanjer; grandparents, Jeff Swearingen, Steve & Pat Gosch; uncles, Mark Swearingen (Shawna Carmen), Scott Spanjer (Dayna Hildebrand-Crandell), Andy Spanjer, and Eric Spanjer (Karri); cousins; and a host of other family and friends.
Visitation will be held from 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM with a memorial service to begin at 3:00 PM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Saturday, July 18, 2026. In lieu of plants and flowers, the family will direct memorials in Lucas's honor.
