Marjorie Lee Miller

June 24, 1940 — May 4, 2026

Marjorie Lee was born in Eldora, Iowa to Velma Tideback Miller and Lloyd Milller.

Marge went to Eldora High School and graduated in 1958. She attended Wartburg College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education in 1963 and then returned to earn a Master's Degree as a Reading Specialist from the University of Northern Iowa in 1995.

Her teaching career spanned 42 years, and she taught in the greater Los Angeles, California area, Minnesota, and Council Bluffs, Iowa. Marge was first a classroom teacher and then became a Reading Recovery teacher where she imparted the gift of reading to hundreds of children. When asked about her experiences, she said that she helped her students become confident, capable readers and her work brought her great joy. Marge also had a unique gift for recognizing reading challenges in children. She knew just what books each of her students might connect with and treated each student as if they were her own family. It was not uncommon that Marge would be approached by former students who would give her a hug and express their gratefulness for the important role she played in their life. She was an unforgettable teacher.

Marge was an only child and while a very independent person, she also cultivated long standing and deep friendships. She was a wonderful conversationalist, listening to and responding to each person she encountered with genuine interest and a caring heart. She was a natural leader and many sought her advice. She had the gift of being able to assess a situation and would provide thoughtful support and clear thinking towards a resolution.

Marge was uncompromising in her values, shaped by a commitment to faith, education and hard work. Marge was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, LCMS in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She served on many boards including The Heritage Guild and The Mission Board. In addition to her career and work in the community, Marge was dedicated to her parents and her many cousins from the Miller, Kurtz and Tideback families. Marge was always up for some fun!! She loved going out to shop, have lunch or dinner, and a sweet treat, especially an ice cream cone at Doozies! Her quick wit, her great sense of humor, and her warm laugh will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends from her years of teaching, her students, her church and the Prairie Gate community of Council Bluffs.

Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM at Saint Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church on Saturday, May 9, 2026. Visitation will be during the hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Marge's honor.
