Her career in banking spanned over 50 years. They returned to Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 2018 to be closer to family. Mary had many hobbies. She loved decorating, cooking, tending to her flowers, reading and crafting. She had a passion for animals and most of all her dogs, Sammy, Nicko and Elmo, and Mary was fiercely dedicated to her employers. She never had children of her own, but was a mother to all her nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth Bertelsen, sister-in-law, Doris Bertelsen and nephew, Lynn Bertelsen.
