Vernon J. Burkey

Vernon J. Burkey, age 90, of Council Bluffs passed away August 26, 2016 at Bethany Lutheran Home. He was born in Council Bluffs on May 23, 1926 to the late John and Amanda (Rodenburg) Burkey. Vernon proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He is survived by his children, Susan Burkey, Ann Jones (Kevin), Gale Nagunst (Jeff), Ellen Johnson (Mike), Mark Burkey (Beth), Eric Burkey (Brenda); sister, Geraldine Zelfel; sister-in-law, Mary Burkey; grandchildren, Brooke Jones (Marc Lallaman), Scott Jones (Leslie), Bryan Nagunst (Cyndi), Greg Nagunst, Rachel Nagunst, Katie Dinkel (Brian), Molly Hopkins (Jim), Sean Johnson (Megan), Daniel Burkey (Dana), Patrick Burkey, Lauren Burkey, Austin Burkey and Logan Burkey, great grandchildren, Andrew, Lily, Jimmy, Hailey, Caleb, Macy, Owen, Brooks and Henry; a host of other family and friends. Visitation is 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. on Tuesday at the Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home. Funeral service is 10:00a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment is in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Red Cross or St. Croix Hospice.
