Virginia "Ginny" Kelker passed away on August 17th, 2026, at the age of 78, at Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital, following a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.
Ginny was born to the late Lawrence and Bertha (Bensheimer) of German Village (Columbus), Ohio, on March 31, 1948.
Ginny entered into marriage with her husband, Bernard "Bernie" Kelker, on September 19, 1986, and they were approaching their 40th wedding anniversary next month, although the two regularly debated whether they had been married for 38 or 39 years. Ginny was right! (Sorry, Bernie.)
The couple met and fell in love later in life, and although they were not blessed with children, their life together was filled with love, travel, laughter, and immense professional success.
Ginny was not a boastful person but is beyond deserving to have her story properly told, as she did for others for so many years.
Ginny served as both a writer and editor for multiple newspapers across the United States before ultimately retiring from The Omaha World-Herald after more than 20 years in editorial.
Ginny was recognized for multiple writing pieces throughout her incredible career, including a story on former Nebraska Head Coach Tom Osborne and his multiple championships, published on October 28, 1995.
Ginny was one of the first female writers to be inducted into the Writers Guild, and she and Bernie traveled to Chicago together, where she received this prestigious honor.
Ginny is survived by her husband, Bernie. The two had resided together, side-by-side, at Northcrest Living Center since 2021.
